Wasps have been in France all week on a training camp and will take on Clermont at Issoire Rugby Club after a warm up game between Italian side Zebre and French outfit Tarbes Pyrénées.

“In terms of the rugby it has been a good week,” Young said.

“We’ve got through a lot of work which has been fantastic and it’s been great to get away together with no distractions. We had a live training session against Zebre earlier in the week which wasn’t planned before we got here, but it was very beneficial to both sides and for backs and forwards. We were able to work on units with live opposition which was great for this time of year.”

The key complaint this week from the squad has been weather related!

“The weather hasn’t been very helpful!,” Young added.

“We had a hot day when we arrived but it’s bucketed it down here for much of the week which has been a real shame but we have trained every day and got some great work under our belts.”

“The team have prepared as well as they can now for the first game so they’ve had some down time this afternoon and will be ready for the game tomorrow night. It’s always a long day when you’re waiting for a game but they are looking forward to it.”
“Clermont are going to have a strong side out against us as it’s their last run out before they start the French Top 14 and we couldn’t ask for any more than that. Our aim is to keep building towards that opening game and I expect by the final friendly against London Irish we’ll be in pretty good shape.”

Wasps will be operating with rolling substitutes this Friday night and a 27-player squad will be used for the game.

Of those who have travelled to France Joe Launchbury, Rory Pitman. Ashley Johnson (still rehabbing minor injuries), Christian Wade and recent arrival Taoine Vea will sit the game out.

Young said: “I want to get everyone some game time this Friday and it’s good to have that extended 27 player squad to choose from.”
