Our Community Team will be delivering elements of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme to schools in the South Oxfordshire area of our Community.
Sting supporting the programme
Aviva Premiership Rugby’s key legacy project, the Aviva Schools Programme, kicked off its third season in September 2012. The Programme, which comes with a £2m investment from Aviva, is an initiative which introduces more than 39,000 young people each season to rugby union through tag rugby, creating a vibrant and effective rugby legacy in England.This scheme targets new-to-rugby, non-traditional rugby schools. It provides five weeks of coaching and teacher training, grassroots club links, plus resources for the school to continue to play rugby in the future.
The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils. Each Premiership Rugby club will work with two classes at 50 schools. During February and March 2013 we will be in the following schools;
We will also be running two Teacher Education "Intro to Tag Rugby" sessions this half term, at Wallingford RFC on 18th March and Marlow RUFC on 20th March.
As Phase Four of the London Wasps Community Schools Programme continues, our Community Rugby Coach Ben Smiley told wasps.co.uk, "Whilst it is important for us to continue to manage our partnerships with schools in and around the Aylesbury, High Wycombe and Marlow areas, our ultimate aim is to develop new links with schools that are still within reaching distance of Adams Park Stadium, in order to enthuse more and more people to support London Wasps. There is lots of rugby played in South Oxfordshire, and we hope that our delivery of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme in this area will motivate players to join their local rugby clubs, and follow one of the most successful clubs in the professional era of Rugby Union."
Sarah Loughran, Head of Corporate Sponsorship at Aviva added; "Key for Aviva was the ability for us to be able to deliver a sustainable legacy as part of the partnership that we have with Premiership Rugby. In the delivery of the Aviva Schools Programme we are seeing lasting results through 1,200 teachers each year continuing to be able to teach Tag in their schools and so hopefully inspire the next generation of rugby players to take up the sport whilst impacting over 40,000 children each season."
