Young's side saw off a struggling Sale team at Adams Park to go 7th in the Aviva Premiership table and to keep their 100% home record this season intact.
The Wasps boss was pleased with the result but believes the performance was well below par.
"We were poor today in attack and defence but we weren’t capable last season of playing poorly and still getting a result so in many ways today shows how far we have come," said Young.
"We have two huge games coming up over the festive period against London Welsh and Bath and we need to get better, but sometimes you don't play well but you find a way to win and that's what we did today. That was one of our poorest performances for about six weeks and we've won. We are taking big strides forward but there is more to come."
When asked about the continued progression of young Billy Vunipola, Young said.
"I thought Billy was outstanding today and he has been pretty much in the same vein for most of this season. It is hard to believe how young he is. I thought him and Joe Simpson were two of the leading lights today really. I know if Billy is called upon he won't let anyone down at England level. I believe he is ready now but their are some good number 8s out there so he may have to wait though it won't be too long if he keeps playing like that."
