On Thursday 13th December our Community Rugby Coaches Ben Smiley and Ian Isham delivered a Teacher Education session, as a part of the MBNA Tackling Numbers Tag Rugby Programme.
Tackling Numbers is delivered by MBNA, Premiership Rugby and the Premiership Rugby clubs with the aim of making numeracy challenges exciting, fun and relevant to real life. The programme utilises the power of rugby to promote the understanding and learning of numeracy. The classroom sessions are supported by practical PE sessions that unite an active mind with an active body. The interactive programme takes a rounded approach to teaching children about the importance of number skills in all walks of life. Tackling Numbers is delivered in partnership with the 12 Premiership Rugby Clubs, and Leeds Carnegie, and aims to capitalise on rugby’s ability to engage with children inside and out with the classroom.
Ben and Ian delivered the uncertificated course to 20 teachers and young people from schools within our Tackling Numbers Programme at The Cressex School in High Wycombe. During the session, Ian led a practical delivery where the coaches took part in some of the Tag Rugby games, before Ben worked with the teachers in a classroom environment to identify their understanding of what Tag Rugby is, and to fill in any gaps. After the training session, the participants were invited to watch London Wasps play Aviron Bayonnais in the Amlin European Challenge Cup.
Following the MBNA Teacher Education Day, Ben Smiley told wasps.co.uk, "I hope that the teachers who attended the Coach the Coaches session benefitted from the activities and discussions. The teachers have taken a positive step towards increasing their knowledge of Tag Rugby and how to coach it in an Active, Purposeful, Enjoyable and Safe environment."
