Adams Park to welcome star Olympic duo!

London Wasps are delighted to confirm that Olympic Gold medallists Katherine Grainger and Anna Watkins will be special guests at their home Aviva Premiership game against London Welsh on Sunday, October 28.

The duo brought joy to the nation earlier this year with their superb Gold medal effort in the women’s double sculls and both are huge rugby fans.

Grainger, for whom victory at London 20120 was particularly sweet, having had to be content with silver the three previous Olympics, said:

"Anna and I are both big rugby fans and love watching live sport so it will be a huge treat for us. I have been to Wasps several times and love the atmosphere at Adams Park - it’s an intimate ground, you feel so close to the action and the Wasps fans are so welcoming. After the success of the Olympics, Paralympics, golf and tennis, I’m really looking forward to rugby now continuing this fantastic year of sport and giving us even more to enjoy and celebrate. “

Grainger and Watkins, who lives locally in Berkshire, will be presented to the crowd at the game with their gold medals and talk about their experience in front of the Adams Park faithful.

Grainger said she always followed the rugby season closely throughout the year.

“Anna and I have rowed together in the double sculls for three years before the Olympics so we spent a lot of time together training at home or on camps abroad as well as at overseas competitions. The programme gave us very little free time but we tried to follow rugby whenever we could particularly the Autumn International series and the RBS 6 Nations. Being a Scotland supporter and Anna being an England fan meant that there was always harmony in the boat on the water but some healthy rivalry off it whenever we watched a game and one of our sides were playing!”

She added that she hoped to hear plenty of noise on her visit to Adams Park from the supporters.

“Support from spectators can make a real difference to your performance in any sport - it certainly helped us during the Olympics at Dorney. The crowd there were simply amazing – we had never heard anything like it when we raced in the final and won Gold. It was a continuous wall of sound almost from the start and something we will never forget. Now that London Welsh are based at Oxford, this game has all the hallmarks of a local derby and hopefully the atmosphere to go with it. It should be a great contest and we hope everyone has a great time today and that the crowd have plenty to cheer about.”
