London Double Header Festival of Rugby

Read more from Ben Smiley about the community events held before the London Double Header

On Saturday 1st September we welcomed the start of the Aviva Premiership Rugby season as our Community Team joined members of community teams from Harlequins, London Irish and Saracens to run the London Double Header Festival of Rugby.

The Festival at The Old Deer Park comprised of a Tag Rugby event for U8s and U9 teams and a coaching clinic for U10s, U11s, U12s and U13s players. Our Community Staff worked with coaches from Harlequins to deliver a range of coaching clinic sessions for 80 children who were present; including:

  • Ball Handling
  • Continuity
  • Creating and identifying space
  • Offloading

Through the Tag Rugby Festivals, 8 teams from each age-group were selected to play in exhibition matches at the half-times of the Aviva Premiership Rugby matches. At the half-time of the London Wasps vs. Harlequins match, the following U8s teams showed off their skills;

  • Bromsgrove RFC
  • Dartfordians RFC
  • Effingham and Leatherhead RFC
  • Guildford RFC
  • Hertford RFC
  • Medway RFC
  • Old Reigatians RFC
  • Rosslyn Park RFC

NB: The age-groups were based on the 2011/12 season, but played last season's Tag Rugby laws, in line with the RFU Continuum
