London Wasps support girls rugby coaching in High Wycombe

Read about our partnership with Wycombe District Council to introduce rugby to girls

On Monday 26th March London Wasps supported Wycombe District Council with the culmination of this half-term's girls coaching programme at High Wycombe RUFC. Since half-term 5 secondary schools have received 5-weeks of coaching, delivered by Wycombe District Council, RFU and London Wasps, at;

  • Cressex Community School, High Wycombe
  • Great Marlow School, Marlow
  • Sir William Borlase Grammar School, Marlow
  • Sir William Ramsay Grammar School, Hazlemere
  • St Bernard's Catholic School, High Wycombe

The coaching has been focused on delivering the key introduction to contact skills for the Year 7, 8 and 9 girls. These skills include;

  • Making safe contact with the ground
  • Tackling
  • Mauling
  • Rucking
  • Scrummaging

The programme finale saw the 5-schools visit High Wycombe RUFC to take part in follow-up coaching and a competitive Festival; where the teams pitted their skills against each other. London Wasps Community Coach, and Wasps FC & England Under 20s player Hannah Edwards provided inspiration as a local role model for the young girls; talking and coaching before and during their matches.

Following the event at High Wycombe RUFC, Community Rugby Coach Ben Smiley told "This event was a pleasure to work at, because all of the girls were eager to learn rugby and play in a meaningful competition. The combination of 5-weeks of coaching at the girls' schools, and the coaching in a club rugby environment really seemed to motivate them to work well together and work hard to improve their skills. I hope that the girls will now see rugby as a real sporting option as they look to develop their sports."
