ESPN Masterclass Coaching at Icknield Community College

Read about Tom Rees and Chris Elder visiting the school in Watlington, Oxfordshire

On Thursday 2nd February London Wasps players Tom Rees and Academy Centre Chris Elder joined our Community Team, and ESPN Head Commentator Nick Mullins at Icknield Community College in Watlington, Oxfordshire to deliver the ESPN Masterclass. The event was organised ahead of ESPN's coverage of London Wasps v Saracens on Sunday 12th February, as part of ESPN's ongoing commitment to grassroots rugby.

Despite the bitterly cold conditions the coaches and players kept the 100 children, from the Year 7 & 8 girls and Year 7 & 8 boys, fully engaged in handling activities and modified games. Community Rugby Coach Ben Smiley told, "Despite freezing conditions, all of the children worked really hard and demonstrated a huge improvement in their spacial awareness and ball handling skills. I hope that the children were inspired by the presence of the London Wasps players and Nick Mullins; all of whom were fantastic in making themselves available throughout to support the coaching and answer questions."

Nick Mullins said, "The success of the event can be gauged by the fact that it felt like minus 4 degrees this morning and that we were on an Antarctic expedition but the kids all had huge smiles on their faces and loved being exposed to the quality of the coaching provided by London Wasps."

Adrian Thomas, PE Dept at Icknield Community College, Watlington, "A fantastic day and a great opportunity for the boys and girls to learn more about rugby. A huge thank you to Wasps and ESPN for the event."

As a part of the ESPN Masterclass, each participant was given the opportunity to claim a FREE match ticket to London Wasps v Saracens; we look forward to welcoming the children and their parents to Adams Park Stadium on 12th February (1.15pm KO).
