Wentzel was handed the captain’s armband at Wasps last weekend with regular skipper John Hart sidelined through injury for a lengthy spell, and the experienced lock says the team have already moved on from the result at Gloucester ahead of the big game on Sunday.
“We were all very disappointed with the game down at Gloucester and we’re doing a lot of work this week looking at what went wrong and what we need to improve. We’ve already moved forward positively. Reviewing last week it was clear that we made a lot of uncharacteristic mistakes. Defensively we weren’t good but through the rest of the games in the league so far we were one of the better teams defensively so we’re not going to start drastically changing things.”
“You can’t sit here and simply dwell on what went wrong last week. It was a bad loss for us for sure but I wouldn’t say we were totally outplayed, we lost the game through silly errors we made and we can fix that.”
Wenztel welcomed the arrival of Namibian backrow Tinus Du Plessis to the Wasps ranks this week with the flanker/number 8 reporting for training at Twyford Avenue today.
“He is a very tough guy and he is fresh and he comes into an important area like backrow where we are missing a lot of players. It looks pretty positive too that we will have four or five guys coming back in in the next few weeks – it might not sound like a lot but for us that will be a huge boost. We haven’t been using injuries as an excuse for some results lately but I would be lying if I said they don’t have an impact. We are missing some really key guys in key positions and that’s affected us both in games and at training but it looks like we will be turning a corner soon.”
On the challenge of facing Worcester, Wentzel says he has no doubt that Sunday will be a huge test.
“They are a good side, a very physical team and I am sure they will target breakdown having seen a few cracks in what we did last week. Like us, they know there are a hell of a lot of games to go in the Aviva Premiership and they will be fighting too for every point. It will be a fight, but we enjoy a good tussle so it’s going to be a big 80 minutes for both sides.”
