Team News: Wasps name team for London Irish clash

Wasps return to Aviva Premiership action against London Irish this Saturday.

Having picked up maximum points in their two Amlin Challenge Cup games in the last two weeks, London Wasps return to the Aviva Premiership this weekend with a game against London Irish at the Madejski.

Rob Webber will step onto the pitch this weekend for his 100th club appearance for London Wasps.

Tom Varndell and Christian Wade both return to the wings after a week’s rest, while Hugo Southwell retains his place at fullback after a man of the match performance and three tries last weekend.

Dom Waldouck and Elliot Daly pair up in the centres for the first time this season, having both impressed in the last few week. Nic Berry and Nick Robinson start at nine and ten respectively.

Rob Webber, making his landmark 100th appearance, joins Tim Payne and Ben Broster in the front row, supported by the familiar second row pairing of Marco Wentzel and Ross Filipo, while the back row remains unchanged with Matt Everard and Richard Birkett flanking and captain John Hart at number 8.

Director of Rugby Dai Young said, “This is obviously a massive game for us and this next period of five games will really shape our season. We understand the threat that London Irish pose to us. Despite only winning three games, they have scored a lot of points, which has given them the bonus points to put them at third in the table. “

“It was evident from last weekend’s game against Cardiff that, even with 14 men, they could have won that game, and there is obviously a great team spirit there for them to put out those kind of performances.”

“Our performances in the Amlin Challenge Cup have given us a few selection headaches. At Loosehead and at Hooker, Zak Taulafo and Tom Lindsay have both shown some real class and were very unlucky to miss out on a starting place this weekend. Also, in the backs Richard Haughton has really impressed, and is equally as unfortunate to be on the bench today. Competition within the squad is great and I know that those guys will want to prove a point when they do come on.”

“It is really exciting for the club to have so many young players performing well in the first team and it is really pleasing to be able to give Elliot Daly a starting place this weekend. A special mention should also go to Rob Webber who makes his 100th appearance for the club this week. Rob is a real leader within the team despite being only 25 and I expect no different from him today.”
