Your questions answered: Wasps v Harlequins in Abu Dhabi

Full details for supporters ahead of Wasps' LV= Cup clash with Harlequins in Abu Dhabi

How did this opportunity to move the game to Abu Dhabi come about?
As part of the club’s ongoing ambitions to develop a new community stadium in High Wycombe, Club Owner Steve Hayes and Board Director Lawrence Dallaglio visited Abu Dhabi at the end of last year to look into stadium development in the region. This visit allowed the Wasps pair to meet with the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and has since bought about this unique opportunity to showcase two of England’s finest domestic rugby teams in new overseas realms.

What are the benefits to the club in moving this game?
London Wasps have always pride themselves on being the first to try new things to ensure success on the pitch and the club are eager to take that innovation into their commercial plans to ensure its long term future. By taking this game to Abu Dhabi there is huge potential for international brand exposure, in turn helping to drive interest in London Wasps. The opportunity to engage with new international markets provides the club with new commercial opportunities, which we hope can take us global and help us sustain a successful future.

This is a world-first for domestic rugby – no other competitive fixture has been moved abroad and the club are very proud to drive innovation in the game. The positives for rugby and the LV= Cup tournament are also vast through the opportunity to engage a new audience and build excitement and interest in our sport, our players, our brand of rugby and a competition which promotes young aspiring talent.

Our players will also have the opportunity to enjoy being a part of this unique experience, building their profiles in front of a new crowd whilst reaping the benefits of warm weather training. There is still much to play for in the LV=Cup and playing this game in such a unique setting adds another dimension to an already competitive fixture.

Great thanks go to Sky Sports for supporting this venture.

Why is this being announced so close to the game?
The opportunity to move this fixture arose at the end of last year and is one that has such great potential that we could not overlook it. We wanted to ensure that all regulations are met and that we comply with the tournament organisers and the necessary regulations so it has taken time to ensure all aspects of the game meet the criteria. All parties are very happy this is now the case and we can now proceed and deliver. We know our supporters want a sustained a long term future for the club we hope any disappointment felt in moving the game out of Adams Park will be offset by the opportunity to put Wasps in front of a new audience and help secure new commercial contacts whilst taking our brand global.

Is this game going to become an annual fixture?
This is an innovative concept which we view as a one-off opportunity that does not detract from our focus of driving success on home soil in the longer term.

What will the squad be doing in the build up to this game?
The focus on the pitch and in training remains fully aligned to our up-and-coming fixtures against Harlequins in the Aviva Premiership and our Heineken Cup clashes with Glasgow and Toulouse. However the squad are extremely excited by the chance to take Wasps rugby overseas and engage with new audiences. The team will travel well in advance of the game to ensure full match preparation for this important LV= Cup fixture, but whilst in Abu Dhabi they will also engage with the local community and local rugby clubs in an effort help promote rugby in association with the United Arab Emirates Rugby Association and the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. London Wasps supporters will be able to follow the team’s movements with exclusive diaries, pictures and online interviews that will be uploaded to www.wasps.co.uk in the build up to the game.
