Tom Varndell tackles Australian captain James Stannard on day one of the London Sevens
After narrowly falling short in the Cup quarter final, 17-12 against reigning World Series champions South Africa, England faced New Zealand in the Plate semi finals of the competition.
New Zealand lead 12-7 at the break, before a rousing fightback from England saw them score the first two tries of the second half - including one from Wasps' Sevens star Wade - to open up a 19-12 lead.
However, two late tries from the Kiwis secured a 22-19 win to break the hearts of the home crowd at Twickenham.
New Zealand went on to win the Plate final in another thriller, coming from behind with another late try to snatch a 26-24 win against Fiji.
The tournament was ultimately won by Australia, who clinched a 19-14 win over South Africa in the final thanks to nine points and a try-saving tackle from captain James Stannard.
