On Bank Holiday Monday 25th August we welcomed 110 young rugby players aged between 8 and 14 to Community Partner Club High Wycombe RUFC for our 3-Day Summer CoacHclass. Following the success of our 1-Day May Half-Term CoacHclass we once again received fantastic support from the members of High Wycombe RUFC as well as from rugby players from the surrounding area. All of the players arrived enthusiastic about what the 3 days would hold in store for them eager to develop their rugby skills.

CoacHclass Development Officer Russell Bolton said of the CoacHclass, "Our annual Summer CoacHclass at High Wycombe RUFC always proves to be a huge success and this year is no exception with lots of young rugby players local to Adams Park eager to improve their skills and try to emulate their London Wasps heroes. As always we have received great support from the staff at High Wycombe RUFC with special thanks to Don and Min Dickerson and Dave Grigg for ensuring that the CoacHclass ran smoothly. We are already looking forward to working with High Wycombe RUFC in the coming season.'

Our CoacHclass aims are to develop young rugby player's core skills and game understanding by using specific exercises to develop technique and then put those techniques under pressure in games to develop skill. Our staff of RFU qualified coaches worked hard to ensure that not only are rugby skills developed but also the players' leadership and teamwork skills; attributes that are vital both in sport and our everyday lives.

Throughout the CoacHclass our players were coached skills such as:

  • Athletic Development
  • Handling
  • Side-on Tackle
  • Decision Making
  • Switch and Scissor Passes
  • Front-on Tackle
  • Breakdown Passes
  • Rucking
  • Three-Point Principle
  • Passing before, during and after contact
  • Mauling
  • Hit & Spin
  • Game-Related Practices

Our CoacHclass players were split into their age groups and worked within the continuum set out by the RFU. Coaching groups were:

  • Under 8s coached by Adam Copperwheat
  • Under 9s and Under 10s coached by Ben Smiley, Matt Bray and Dan Sumnal
  • Under 11s coached by Paul Green, Mike Hudson and Malcolm Deay
  • Under 12s, coached by Matt Allen and Russell Bolton
  • Under 13s and Under 14s coached by Ian Davis, Gavin Bunker and Tom LeMehaute

On the final day of the course we were joined by professional photographer Steve Mitchell from Digital Sports UK who joined us for the whole day taking some fantastic action shots of the players in their sessions. He was also able to take a photo of every individual player with the Guinness Premiership Trophy. Click on the Premier Rugby Camps menu to view the images taken at High Wycombe RUFC.
