On Monday 18th August we welcomed 80 young rugby players aged between 8 and 14 to Community Partner Club Amersham & Chiltern RFC for our 3-Day summer CoacHclass. Following the success of our 1-Day New Year CoacHclass we once again received fantastic support from the members of Amersham & Chiltern RFC and players from the surrounding area. All of the players arrived enthusiastic about what the week would hold in store for them eager to develop their rugby skills.

CoacHclass Development Officer told wasps.co.uk, "It was great to be back at Amersham & Chiltern RFC building on the relationship that has been developing over the past few seasons. The club has a great facility and we are always made to feel extremely welcome by the club and all of its members. A big thank you to Stephen Lawrence and the rest of the club for helping us to host CoacHclass this summer."

The Aims and Objectives of the CoacHclass were to develop young rugby player's core skills and game understanding by using specific exercises to develop technique and then put those techniques under pressure in games to develop skill. Our staff of RFU qualified coach's work hard to ensure that not only rugby skills are developed but also players leadership and teamwork sills. Attributes that are vital both in sport and our everyday lives. Throughout the CoacHclass players looked at various skills such as:

  • Athletic Development
  • Handling
  • Side-on Tackle
  • Decision Making
  • Switch and Scissor Passes
  • Front-on Tackle
  • Breakdown Pass
  • Rucking
  • Three-Point Principle
  • Passing before, during and after contact
  • Mauling
  • Hit & Spin
  • Game-Related Practices

All players were split into their age groups and worked within the continuum set out by the RFU. Coaching groups were:

  • Under 8s coached by Gareth Tuffin and Paul Green
  • Under 9s and Under 10s coached by Ben Smiley and Adam Copperwheat
  • Under 11s coached by Martin Moran and Jonny Hutchings
  • Under 12s, Under 13s and Under 14s coached by Chris Davies, Craig Burgess and Russell Bolton

On the final day of the course we were joined by two guests. Professional photographer Steve Mitchell from Digital Sports UK joined us for the whole day taking some fantastic action shots of the players in their sessions. He was also able to take a photo of every individual player with the Guinness Premiership Trophy and our other guest, London Wasps fly half Dave Walder. Dave Walder was yet again out in our community to meet the budding young Wasps fans on the CoacHclass. Dave who is a Level 2 qualified coach visited each group and was able to pass on his knowledge by leading some sessions. Dave showed some sparkling form for Wasps last season before suffering an injury against Worcester Warriors; we wish him well with his recovery and hope he makes a return to the London Wasps team in the near future. Dave told wasps.co.uk, "It is always a privilege to go out into the community and meet the next generation of Wasps fans. All of the players on the CoacHclass were really enthusiastic to improve their rugby skills and I hope that my contribution has helped to inspire them ahead of the new season."

Thank you to Steve and Dave for taking the time to visit the CoacHclass.
