Vickery Proves a Hit at the Marlow RFC Mini Tournament

London Wasps Star and England Captain Phil Vickery was the guest of honour at the 36th Annual Mini Rugby Tournament at Community Partner Club Marlow RFC on Sunday.

The festival which is one of the largest in the South of England featured 15 Clubs at under 7s through to under 12's, from as far a field as Morpeth RFC, Northumberland, Stratford upon Avon RFC, Warwickshire and both Jersey and Guernsey RFC's. Also participating were London Wasps Community Partner Clubs;

  • Wasps FC
  • Windsor RFC
  • Beaconsfield RFC
  • Tring RFC
  • Chipping Norton RFC
  • and host club Marlow RFC
  • Community Team members Jonny Hutchings and Russell Bolton were joined by volunteers from Bucks New Uni to assist with refereeing through out the day which saw over 350 games played by the 2400 participating players.

    Upon completion of the under 12's finals Phil Vickery was on hand to present the winners, London Irish Amateurs, with the Harry Mills Memorial Cup. The Harry Mills Memorial Cup is a poignant tribute to a young Marlow RFC player and London Wasps CoacHclass participant who died of meningitis shortly after last season festival. The Cup will now be played for every year as a tribute to Harry.

    Edward Pringle-Stacey of Marlow RFC emailed the Community Team to say;
    Thank you very much for your support yesterday, it's always great to have you guys down at the Club and is very much appreciated.

    Also a massive thanks for arranging the visit by Phil, he was a huge success and the boys loved him (so did the parents).

    On a more important note, both Richard and Judy Mills were extremely grateful that Phil agreed to present the Harry Mills Memorial Trophy in honor of their son Harry who died three weeks after last year's Tournament from Meningitis.

    London Wasps CDO Jonny Hutchings told wasps.co.uk;
    Sunday was a great example of how good Community Rugby can be. The event was so well planned that it must surely become a beacon of good practice for all clubs wishing to host a tournament. With great weather and good rugby it was a pleasure to be involved with the festival.

    London Wasps Community Team will be staging a 2 Day CoacHclass coaching camp at Marlow RFC between the 10th & 11th April. For further details please click here
