Apprentices celebrate win
The London Wasps Apprenticeship traveled to Biarritz this week for their half term tour, and will return to the club on high following a 24-7 victory over Dax Rugby Club - home town of London Wasps Raphael Ibanez, who kindly assisted Wasps Apprenticeship Manager Chris Lloyd in organizing the tour.
The game saw the Apprentices open well, settling into a pattern of play which allowed them to overshadow the home side in the first half. Wasps opened the try scoring after an Aidan Bruynseels line brake allowed smart handling from Truman Sullivan to put the supporting Freddy Edwards over for five points. Dax, unsettled by the score, failed to kick-off the required 10 meters and from the resultant Wasps scrum, Apprenticeship club captain Bruynseels was again on hand this time offloading to Ollie Holmes who ran a great line, sidestepping the awaiting fullback to score under the posts and take the visiting side in ahead at half time.
Despite Wasps dominance in the first forty, it was Dax who opened scoring in the second half after a well executed catch and drive. The score seemed to lift the homes side confidence and Wasps were forced to spend the next 25 minutes defending their line as Dax tightened up their game. Solid defence and continued hard work from the apprentices did keep the home side out however, and as Gavin Williams pressed through onto loose Dax ball he made his way up-field linking with Ollie Holmes who cruised in for his second score of the afternoon. The try signaled the end of Dax's period of attack and some fantastic back to back defending from the visitors who held onto the ball for the remainder of the half.
Adding a further penalty to seal a good win and an outstanding performance, particularly in defence in the second forty, the Apprentices did themselves and the club proud.
London Wasps Apprenticeship would like to thank all those who helped to make the tour possible.
