Aviva Tackling Numbers

Making maths fun for kids

If you think maths is never fun, this is where the fun starts!

We’re joining forces with Premiership Rugby sponsors Aviva to help children develop their numeracy skills through rugby.

Numbers matter

Shockingly, research shows that 8.5 million British adults have the numeracy skills of a 10-year-old.

Maths isn’t just about long division, algebra and trigonometry. It’s about checking your change in the shop, making sure you can afford something, and balancing your budget. That’s why it’s so important for our kids to be comfortable with sums.

As a financial services company, Aviva knows how important it is to give children a good grounding in personal finance.

Learning through rugby

Making learning fun is a great way to help children absorb lessons that will stay with them and that’s where Wasps can help. We’ll be continuing to deliver Aviva Tackling Numbers, the rugby-themed, numeracy programme for eight to nine year olds funded by Aviva.

The course aims to make learning numbers fun using touch rugby to:

  • Increase children’s understanding of number skills
  • Boost their confidence in dealing with numbers
  • Help them become physically fitter.

Aviva Tackling Numbers also marks the first time rugby stars of the future encounter the game. After year two, a whopping 88% of teachers are now more confident in coaching rugby, thanks to this training.

Of Aviva Tackling Numbers Programme, Wayne Morris, Community and Corporate Responsibility Director at Premiership Rugby said:
"Piloted between 2009 and 2011 in schools, Tackling Numbers is proven to catalyse improved numeracy skills and increased activity. With our partners Aviva, Premiership Rugby is excited to take Aviva Tackling Numbers into a new era.

"Aviva Tackling Numbers equips children with the confidence and skills to use maths in a practical way. It provides the foundations for children to manage their money well, now and in the future. Recognising this contribution to increasing financial literacy in the UK, Aviva Tackling Numbers has been awarded the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) Quality Mark. We are proud to receive this seal of approval from the UK’s leading independent authority on financial education."

Following the announcement that Aviva are supporting the Tackling Numbers Programme, Aviva UK Marketing Director Heather Smith told us: "Aviva already plays an active role in our communities and we’re extending this with our support of Tackling Numbers. This programme can help educate young people and prepare them for their future, where basic financial skills are a necessity.

"Aviva has a long history of working with grassroots sports, and this is a natural extension of the work we’ve been doing. Time and again we’ve seen the importance of understanding financial matters in adult life. Through our partnership with Premiership Rugby, we can help children to be more confident in maths and increase their enjoyment of numeracy, and build their money skills. We see this as an investment in their future financial security."
