Ben Gotting 2003/2004

Ben Gotting

Last season, Ben Gotting was relatively unknown outside of Wasps' circles. Then during last season's Zurich Premiership Final at Twickenham, Wasps were struggling against Bath. Ben came on as a replacement and immediately made a massive impact at the lineout and basically swung the game in Wasps' favour. He was given the honour of leading the post-match celebrations and rightly so. Born in Dubai, this hooker is one of the very few Anglo-Indian players in the Premiership.

He began his rugby at Camberley Rugby Club at eight years of age but admits he never liked it. Then after a move to Zimbabwe with his parents and the boarding school lifestyle, he gradually starting to enjoy rugby more and decided to follow it as a career. He rejoined Camberley, moved up through the Colts and into the first team. Wasps approached him saying they needed an U21 hooker in 2001, and since then hasn't looked back. He studied Sports Science at Brunel University and was a member of the winning side that defeated St Mary's in the BUSA final at Twickenham in 2002. His first season at London Wasps coincided with some notable achievements, namely selection for England Universities and the climax of the year was the winning of the Zurich U21 Final at Twickenham in June 2002 before being a part of the England U21 Team playing in the U21 World Cup in South Africa in 2002.

Having to compete for a place against Trevor Leota and Phil Greening in the same squad is never easy, but Ben is holding his own.
