Jonny O joined Wasps from the oft overlooked Irish province, Connacht in the summer of 2003 and thus commenced a battle royal with the then incumbent open side flanker, Paul Volley for the No7 shirt.
This would have come as no surprise to Club Captain Lawrence Dallaglio, who recommended to his Director of Rubgy, Warren Gatland, that Gatland look into gaining the services of the young Irishman after he had made a complete nuisance of himself against Dallaglio in a friendly match the season before.
Gatland duly obliged and by the time Wasps reached the end of the season, it was O'Connor who had first claim on the shirt, only to be cruelly robbed of a chance to play Wasps double winning finals through injury.
However, this truly body-on-the-line flanker had made enough of an impression to earn an international call up in 2004-5, making his debut for Ireland against Argentina in the Autumn internationals, and continuing to play in four out of Ireland's five Six Nations games that season.
Last season Jonny continued to turn in gritty performances week in, week out for his club but a nasty neck injury, suffered in the opening minutes of the Powergen Cup Final at Twickenham last April, saw Jonny stretchered from the field and has kept him out of action as the 2006-7 season gets underway.
