John Hart is one of the most respected members of the London Wasps squad and so it comes as no surprise that he was named as Wasps' captain for the start of the 2007/08 season throughout the World Cup period.
The hidden gem in the Wasps squad, Hart is no stranger to the captain's armband having led Wasps to the most successful start to a season in their professional history in 2005/06, in the absence of the injured Dallaglio. In addition the back row man scored his first 1XV try, against Leeds Tykes, in September 2005.
Hart's season was cut short however, when he dislocated his shoulder playing against Bath in January 2006. Following surgery and rehab he was able to regain his fitness but an injury to his calf and an ultra competitive back row contingent in 2006/07 inhibited his appearances in the 1XV to just 11. He was however instrumental in Wasps A League title success, lifting the trophy as captain last April.
Having joined Wasps as an Academy player, Harty has worked his way up through the ranks. His attitude was illustrated perfectly in an outstanding performance in May 2005 at Twickenham that helped Wasps to their third successive Premiership title. That performance fully shows why he commands the respect of his team-mates.
Away from the rugby field he enjoys unwinding through the medium of film. He is also kept busy with a new edition to the family, Rupert the puppy, who keeps him and new wife Hayley very busy.
John credits his older brother as one of the biggest influences in his career, also a former member of the Wasps U21s side, and lists figures such as Linford Christie, Mohammed Ali and Zinzan Brooke as his sporting idols.
Away from the game Hart is eager to continue in his rugby coaching in 2007/08, having just completed his level 2 programme - a route he would perhaps like to explore when he does eventually hang up his boots.
His main aim for 2007/08 is to retain his spot in the 1XV and with Hart in great shape, having shed over a stone since last season by adopting a new training and fitness programme, he certainly looks set to make his mark.
