Born in Christchurch, Poff began his professional career at Tasman in 2006 having risen through the New Zealand schools system.
Poff played for the NZ Secondary Schools in 2002 and in 2004 played in the NZ Colts team at an U21 World Cup.
In 2007 Poff made the Canterbury Crusaders squad, and in 2009 he became the 139th Crusader against the Stormers.
Poff developed his backrow trade at the Crusaders behind Richie McCaw and joined Wasps with a reputation as a real forager and strong carrier. His reputation didn't lie and in his first game with the Club after just a couple of weeks in the country, Poff was named Man of the Match as Wasps kicked off the 2011/12 season with a win over Saracens at Twickenham.
Poff has since quickly become a fans favourite and first choice in the number 7 shirt.
