Wasps 'A' outmuscled by Quins

Wasps 'A' 6 - 15 Harlequins 'A'

Wasps ‘A’ hosted Harlequins ‘A’ at Henley on Monday night in the last home game of the Aviva A League schedule, with Quins bringing with them a very strong squad with the likes of Tom Guest, Aston Croall, Ross Chisholm, Sam Smith and Rory Clegg among their starting line-up.

Wasps, who were captained by Chris Mayor, had a far younger and less experienced side out who battled well against a more physical side in tough conditions. However they were unable to fight the tide, with Quins sealing the win with a try in the last 5 minutes of the game.

Quins started the game the more dominant side, getting the better of the kicking tennis played in the first five minutes when they decided to keep hold of the ball and play some rugby, earning a penalty 45 metres out to the right of the posts. Clegg made no mistake with his opening shot at goal and took Quins into an early 3-0 lead.

Clegg was given another opportunity a few minutes later, this time dead straight in front of the posts 40 metres out, but he hooked his attempt to the right of the uprights.

Wasps, despite being on the back foot for much of the opening 20 minutes, held out well defensively. With 25 minutes gone Wasps attacked from deep after Jack Wallace rose well to collect a high ball under pressure and broke through the Quins line. Wasps moved to the Quins’ ten metre line and earned themselves a penalty dead centre. Ryan Davis took the 3 points to level the scores. Wasps 3-3 Quins.

Wasps seemed to take heart from this, having much of the possession and eventually earning a penalty on the Quins 10 metre line to the left of the posts, which Ryan Davis took well to take Wasps to a 6 – 3 lead.

Quins then returned strongly, attacking well and moving deep into the Wasps 22 and were awarded a scrum, five metres out in the shadow of the posts. Wasps were penalised at the scrum and Quins were awarded a penalty try. Clegg hit the post with the conversion but Quins were in the lead nonetheless, 8 – 6, which is how the half ended.

Wasps made two changes at half time, with Nathan Morris and Marshall Gadd leaving the field, replaced by Ross Grimstone and Alec Hepburn.

Quins started the second half the stronger team again, but strong defence from Wasps, in muddy conditions held them at bay.

With 27 minutes left to play Wasps made two more changes, with Dave Shotton, Mike Powell and Charlie Davies being replaced by Adam Peters, Gerard Ellis and Jonah Holmes.

Wasps held well in defence and slowly managed to edge back into the game, holding possession for brief periods but not really threatening the Quins line.

With 10 minutes remaining Wasps made four changes, with Bob Baker, Ryan Davis, Chris Mayor and Ross Grimstone leaving the field, replaced by Harry Williams, Will Robinson, Mitchell Tamiau and Nathan Morris.

Quins’ pressure finally told with five minutes left to play, with Joe Trayfoot going over from the base of a dominant Quins’ scrum. Clegg converted to take Quins’ lead to 15-6, which is how the game ended.
