Wasps, who are two points clear at the top of their pool, play Bordeaux Begles at Adams Park this weekend knowing that victory by any margin will see them through to the knock-out stages.
Director of Rugby Young said: “I am proud of the team, given all of the distractions this season, that we have put ourselves in the driving seat in the pool, and our fate is now in our hands which is exactly what you want if qualification comes down to the last game. A win may not be enough to earn us a home draw, though it might well be, but I think if we do get the victory we need I will be very pleased with the boys for getting out of a group with two tough French teams in it.”
Young said however that despite his side beating Bordeaux 14-42 earlier this season, the result was far from a foregone conclusion and with Bayonne’s game against Rovigo kicking off at the same time, nothing would be taken for granted.
“Bordeaux have had some good results in the Top 14 and we will only beat them if we improve on last week. They have some quality players right throughout their squad.”
Young added that though there was frustration at the number of injuries in the squad at the moment, he wouldn’t be dwelling on the Club’s misfortune on this front, remaining upbeat.
“We have had no luck. The majority of injuries we have had have mainly been impact and collision injuries as opposed to soft tissue injuries, and that is difficult to plan for. But you have to keep a smile on your face and that’s what I will be doing.”
