For the second time in six days, former Irish international full back Simon Mason kept London Wasps at bay with his right boot. Last Sunday at Loftus Road he kicked 7 out of 8 penalties for Benetton Treviso and on Saturday, on his home ground near Venice, he landed 8 from 10 attempts to help his side to a 32-17 win.
Wasps gave nothing away in defence in this Heineken European Cup tussle but the Italian side showed their savvy and kept re-cycling the ball until they reached their opponent's half - anywhere in the other half is good enough for Mason - and waited for the inevitable penalty. They reached half time with the score at 15-9
For Wasps, fielding a much changed side from last week, Matt Leek at fly-half kicked those three early penalties and when he was substituted by Alex King, suffering from a dead leg and not originally expected to play, another penalty was added to the score and Shane Roiser added a try.
Benetton Treviso had only penalties and a solitary drop goal to show for their efforts but they were more than one score ahead at 27-17 when the game went into injury time. Then the Italian's scrum half Peter Richards, a tourist with England and formerly on the books at London Irish, stole over for a try to carry the game well beyond Wasps' reach.
No more European activity now until early January when Wasps entertain Ulster and then go to Paris for the final game in their pool, against last year's losing finalists Stade Francais.
