Three is the magic number!

<1>London Wasps have defeated Leicester Tigers by a formidable 39 points to 14 to secure a third successive Zurich Premiership Championship at Twickenham this afternoon.

Tom Voyce got Wasps off to a dream start, scooping up the loose ball when Ollie Smith spilled in the tackle to sprint in under the posts on 5 minutes. An earlier Van Gisbergen penalty after 3 minutes and an easy conversion put Wasps 10-0 ahead, soon to be 13 as Alex King dropped a goal on the seventh minute.

Exchanges of penalties took the score to 19-6 at half time, with 3 more points each for Van Gisbergen and Goode making it 22-9 after 50 minutes.

As the clock ticked on, Leicester looked devoid of ideas, and Wasps blitz defence continued to put them under massive pressure.

Van Gisbergen added another try on the 70th minute, and it was a peach to put Wasps 20 points ahead and give Leicester no way back. A Tuilagi counter attack fizzled out, and the ball squirted loose for Will Green to fall on it and secure quick possession. Simon Shaw took it on at pace, and gave the perfect feed to put Van Gisbergen clean away on a 40 metre sprint to the line.

Another conversion and penalty from the prodigious Kiwi took Wasps to 32-9 when on the 77th minutes Bemand went over for a Tigers consolation score. It was Hoadley who put the icing on the cake however as, with all Wasps replacements on, Martin Purdy galloped up the far wing to slip the scoring pass, Hoadley sliding over the line in the final minute.

<2>Van Gisbergen’s final kick of the day put his personal tally at 26 and the final score at 39-14.

Commenting on the game, Director of Rugby Warren Gatland said “It was a great win, and the perfect way to end my time at Wasps.”

Commenting on his team’s performance, Man of the Match Lawrence Dallaglio said “To beat Leicester you have to play on the edge. We had the edge today. Two weeks ago at Welford Road we were way off it, but today we were back on that edge for 80 minutes”

Head Coach Shaun Edwards was full of praise for his team’s tactical performance, for which Leicester had no reply, “It was a blitz defence against a slide defence out there today, and the blitz defence won. We were brutal and brilliant.”
