Why do Teachers and Coaches need to engage with our Education Programme?
Coaching is one of the most crucial factors in developing, sustaining and increasing participation in rugby union, securing the future and quality of the game in our Independent Schools. Anybody can try and coach rugby, but to be an effective coach, you will need to fulfil a number of different roles and accept a variety of responsibilities, covering the technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects demanded by our game. London Wasps is committed to offering a high quality Continuous Professional Development service, from helping volunteers who want to coach junior Tag Rugby to assisting people who aim to reach professional coaching standards with the School 1st XV. By signing up with our Programme, you will be guided and supported through the stages of Continuous Professional Development bespoke to your needs.
The London Wasps Teacher and Coach Education Programme
The recent successes of London Wasps, when we were crowned champions of England four times (02/03, 03/04, 04/05 & 07/08) and champions of Europe twice (03/04 & 06/07), were built on excellent coaching standards that gave a talented group of players the necessary advantages over their opposition to win the highest honours. It is only by embracing modern coaching methods that London Wasps have become established as one of the leading rugby clubs in Europe with aspects like sports science and diet playing a much wider role than ever before.
An integral part of our club’s activities is the increasingly popular Coach The Coaches Programme for our Community Partner Clubs that has been designed to give coaches at all levels the necessary continuous professional development needed to develop their coaching craft, knowledge and experience. This Programme has been adapted for our Independent Schools Programme so that parent volunteers or schoolteachers who simply wants a basic understanding of the game, or a coach keen to progress through the ranks to an advanced level, can engage at different levels appropriate to their development needs.
Our Programme is designed with the recognition that your school should feel the need to provide the highest quality coaching possible and develop your workforce.
What does the Programme consist of?
Our Teacher and Coach Education Programme specifically focuses on providing your workforce with the tools they need to develop rugby within your school. The sessions are delivered at your school by experienced RFU-Qualified Coach Developers, Coach Educators and Coach Trainers from within our Community Team; with an opportunity for you to offer an open invitation to your partner schools and neighbouring rugby club coaches. This is an ideal opportunity for coaches and teachers to exchange ideas, network and establish new partnerships.
Our workshops are based on both theory and practical activities where your school provides players for our Delivery Staff to coach, while we provide ongoing dialogue with the observing coaches and teachers on the processes being used and answer questions throughout. Choose from subjects such as:
How do our teachers and coaches develop?
Experienced teachers and coaches, and those new to the game, are challenged and rewarded alike by our experienced delivery staff in a safe, active, purposeful and enjoyable coach-centred environment. The programme delivery incorporates the London Wasps Community Foundation Grassroots Pillar of Activity main development themes for the young people being coached, while promoting the Rugby Football Union’s Core Values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship:
How does your school benefit from our Teacher / Coach Education Programme?
A priority for every rugby-playing school is to ensure that young players receive high quality player-centred coaching. This Programme can develop your workforce as part of your school's involvement in our Independent Schools Programme, and enhance your Rugby Programme.
Schools should be prepared to offer either funded sessions, part-funded sessions or large group ticket sales-linked sessions to become involved in this initiative. Our delivery will concentrate on the development of core skills through enjoyable activity; promoting participation in grass roots rugby and support for London Wasps. Our local Community Partner rugby clubs will be utilised as 'pathways' for participating children to continue their rugby playing careers during out of school time.
